A Question of Organization

I am not as organized as I think I am. I do know what I need to do though; I need to mark a cutoff time: when/where my weekend ends and the next week begins - even though it's still Sunday. The wayt I've been behaving during the year so far is that I attempt to extend my weekend as long as I can (well into Monday). This is especially when my call time falls later in the day (or night).

I need to take time on a Sunday to plan the week ahead. I have the benefit of having a versatile and highly-functional planner - that has served me very well especially (and obviously) when I take the time to plan my work week - on a given Sunday. Obviously, the more I procrastinate in planning, the less value I get out of using the planner; and consequently my week is significantly less organized.

The tradeoff is, I don't get to be on break when I intend to be on break - which is Sunday (mine and most people's break time). The benefit is of working on a Sunday is that I won't necessarily lapse into on break behavior when I'm not on my break, in action when I have every intention of being lively, crisp and snappy.

I do miss my laptop. My old one (issued by the company) gave up the ghost and our collective efforts to patch together a replacement from the various remains of other machines have not met much success.

There was a time when I overdid the whole laptop bit and found myself working all the time; compromising my weekends and holidays. Now that I don't have a laptop I perceive a dropoff in my efficiency and productivity - not that it compromises my deliverables, only that I miss out on documenting and working on ideas and insights that serependipitously occur to me in my repose or leisure. I mean I do get some neat ideas that has impact on work concerns and issues, projects and such. There is something so comforting in having a live and working computer ready to work with anything you come up with at home or wherever.

Since I'm not committed to work on a Sunday, I won't feel bad if I don't use the computer.

So where's my replacement unit? I just came from a instant messenger chat with my boss and we're toying with the idea of sticking it to the man and bypassing the bureaucracy and just buy the damn thing and charge it to the company. Well, it is the nature of bureaurocracy to slow down the organization and eliminate maverick behavior at the cost of agility and quickness of decision-making and implementation. The usual response of enterprising individuals in a bureaurocracy is to uhm, stick it to the man. that is to follow the unwritten rule:

"In a bureaurocracy, it is easier to apologize than to obtain permission."

Well, I'm in action to get my unit. It's damn time. I really feel that I'm missing out on my natural excitement for work and lose all my momentum every weekend - something that I'm not committed to getting used to. I'm getting organized.
